On February 24, the Kremlin will launch a new offensive in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions. The Ukrainian Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council Oleksiy Danilov has said this and the Bloomberg news agency also writes on the authority of insiders. It would be exactly one year ago that Vladimir Putin declared the “special military operation” in Ukraine.
Putin is reportedly planning a new offensive in the regions bordering Russia. The Kremlin has been losing ground for several months now and wants to “regain the initiative”, according to anonymous officials. In this way they want to put pressure on Kiev and agree on a ceasefire whereby Moscow retains control over Donetsk and Luhansk.
In an interview with Radio Liberty, Danilov said that the Russian army may launch the offensive on February 24. “They are currently preparing for maximum mobilization. It concerns people from the USSR (Soviet Union, ed.): they like to achieve success with birthdays. So it is no secret that they are preparing for a new wave of offensives on February 24,” said Danilov.
Moreover, the offensive might start before the new weapons, including the heavy tanks, arrive in Ukraine from the West.
Vigilance
“Russians are in full force there,” says Danilov, adding that Ukrainian defense forces must now be on maximum readiness as Russia is mobilizing and arming.
At the same time, according to him, the vigilance of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and Ukrainian border guards today is in a completely different state than last year. “Ukraine in February 2022 and February 2023 is already a different situation. But that is no reason for us to rest on our laurels, to believe that everything is over. On the contrary, we must prepare ourselves as much as possible,” he concludes.
