Russia extends detention of basketball star Brittney Griner | Sport

Griner, 31, has been in a Russian prison for nearly four months. The star player of professional team Phoenix Mercury was arrested at Moscow airport on February 17 because cannabis oil was found in her bag. She would face a prison sentence of five to ten years.

A former Pentagon official said in late March that he feared Griner could be used as a hostage by Russia. The US State Department calls the detention “unlawful” and says it is doing everything it can to get her released as soon as possible.
