Russia considered the possible exclusion of the country from the Human Rights Council destructive for the UN

According to the deputy ambassador of Russia, the West wants to undermine the institutions of the organization under the pretext of “punishing” the country. On April 7, the UN General Assembly will vote on the draft resolution of the US and Western countries on the suspension of Russia’s participation in the HRC

The possible removal of Russia from the work of the Human Rights Council (HRC) could lead to devastating consequences for the UN, declared First Deputy Permanent Representative of Russia to the organization Dmitry Polyansky in Telegram.

“This is a landmark step by the United States and its allies, which risks having devastating consequences for the UN system . This situation reveals a broader picture: Western countries want to undermine UN institutions under the guise of punishing Russia,” he wrote.

Russia’s exclusion from the HRC could destroy the foundation of the current multilateral system that took shape after World War II and “saves the world from a third,” Polyansky said. He called the upcoming vote a well-thought-out tactical move that does not concern the conflict in Ukraine.

The US plans to raise the issue of Russia’s exclusion from the UNHRC was announced by the country’s permanent representative to the organization, Linda Thomas-Greenfield. Before that, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said that US President Joe Biden personally instructed the permanent representative to achieve Russia’s exclusion from the UN Human Rights Council because of the events in the Ukrainian city of Bucha. The vote of the UN General Assembly should take place on April 7.
