Russia carries out drone strikes on Kiev for the third day in a row

On Monday morning, Russia again carried out dozens of drone attacks on the Ukrainian capital Kiev, after the city was also targeted on New Year’s Day. The air raid alarm went off for at least three hours, international news agencies report. More than 20 attacks have been intercepted by Ukrainian air defenses, according to Kiev military authorities. Residents were asked to stay in the bomb shelters when that happened.

The attacks mainly targeted critical infrastructure in the city and surrounding areas, officials said. For example, the drones damaged energy facilities and caused power outages in part of the city. Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko said a 19-year-old man was injured by shards of glass in an attack that fell in a densely populated residential area.

It was the third day of attacks in a row after Kiev was targeted on New Year’s Eve. Shortly before and after the transition to 2023, bombings of Kiev and seven other regions killed at least four people and injured 50, according to Ukrainian authorities. Moscow claimed that the attacks targeted unmanned aerial vehicle production facilities.

In the center of Kiev, a rocket flew through the facade of a hotel on New Year’s Eve. Local police chief Andriy Nebitov posted a photo on Facebook of what appeared to be the remains of a drone, according to AFP news agency. He wrote “Happy New Year” in Russian.
