The defense system with accompanying radar was located at the Syrian city of Masyaf from April. That spot was empty and abandoned on August 25 and the equipment was transferred to the Syrian port city of Tartus. This is apparent from other photos taken of the port complex there between 12 and 17 August. A few days later, the weaponry was gone.
ISI concluded that the missiles must have been brought on board the Russian ship Sparta II, which then sailed from Tartus to Novorossiysk in order to give the Russian armed forces more options in the war against Ukraine. Recently, heavy losses have been suffered from Ukrainian counter-attacks. Novorossiysk is located near the bridge connecting the Russian mainland with the Russian-annexed Crimea.
The Russian Defense Ministry, which has been actively supporting President Bashar al-Assad in Syria since 2015, declined to respond to the report of arms transport via the Dardanelles and the Bosphorus.
