Russia appeals to “be macho” to recruit more soldiers against Ukraine

The Ministry of Defense of Russia has launched a new recruiting campaign for military to fight in the war against Ukraine that appeals, through the story of three characters, to “manliness”. “You are a male. Behave like one,” the video states, after introducing a security guard, a taxi driver and a gym instructor who imagine themselves wearing military uniforms.

“Is that the kind of defender you dreamed of becoming?” the ad says in the opening seconds, showing the guard carrying a metal detector at the entrance of a supermarket. Likewise, when a trainer comes out of a gym helping a client do exercises with holds, the video also asks: “Is this where your strength lies?” And, with the images of a taxi driver during a service, he insists: “Was it the path you wanted to choose?”

Later, the audiovisual campaign presents the three young men already in uniform, equipped and armed, marching in slow motion through the fog. And, with this war imagecall the Russians at military service with salaries above 204,000 rubles per month, which is equivalent to about 2,300 euros.
