“Running Up That Hill” continues to go viral: Over 100 million views on YouTube

Driven by “Stranger Things”, Kate Bush’s classic “Running Up That Hill” has already gone viral on TikTok – now also on YouTube.

Kate Bush’s comeback is far from over: the official music video for the synth-pop song has now surpassed 100 million views on YouTube. Since the premiere of Stranger Things 4, views of Bush’s music video for Running Up That Hill have more than doubled on YouTube. 37 years after its initial release, “Running Up That Hill” has rocketed to the top of the charts – Bush’s first top 10 hit in the US.

“It’s so exciting”

The music video was released on YouTube over ten years ago. On May 25, 2022 – just before the release of the first part of “Stranger Things 4” on May 27 – the video had generated around 48 million views. Bush still can’t quite believe her success with the song. She says: “[‚Stranger Things‘] is such a great series, I thought the track would get some attention. But I never thought it would be like this. It’s so exciting. But it’s also pretty shocking, isn’t it? I mean, the whole world has gone mad.” “Running Up That Hill” was the opening track on their 1985 album HOUNDS OF LOVE. The song was released in the UK on August 5, 1985 by EMI.

“A treat for the ears”

The music video, directed by David Garfath, features a dance performance by Kate Bush and dancer Michael Hervieu. The listeners are also enthusiastic about the song and the video. One YouTube user wrote: “A masterpiece! The music of the 80s is a treat for the ears”. Another, intrigued, commented, “When I got home from high school, this song would always play at 3pm. I never missed it. It was one of the best times of my life. I had left home at 16 and lived in this shabby hut with another self-employed child in this valley of green hills, golden sunlight and morning mist. Her voice was the only human beauty I had in my life. I think maybe I was in love with her.”
