The treadmill, from the French for “rolling carpet”, is very useful in certain conditions and for different types of training. Let’s see when it is most suitable and how to best use it for the workout.

  • When the temperature drops of many degrees, or on the contrary outside ago too hot or it’s muggy, or it’s still raining cats and dogs, or the levels of pollution in the air are too high.
  • It is also ideal for making uphill training if you don’t have mountains or hills at your disposal. In fact, it will be sufficient to tilt the treadmill by the desired percentage to make more or less effort.
  • Another important factor for preferring the treadmill in certain situations is explained to us by the personal trainer Marco Taribello: “Running on the treadmill is the situation ideal for athletes who are returning from injury. This is because the risk factors are reduced given that the surface is regular, unlike what we find outdoors.”

the advices

Let’s see some very useful advice for running and training on the treadmill:

  • Let’s not hit the ground running straight away but let’s warm upfor example by doing 5 minutes of brisk walking and gradually increasing the pace.
  • There surface of the treadmill is cushioned, so we run with lighter and “drier” shoes.
  • Indoors lacks air resistanceto compensate you can tilt the belt by 1-1.5%.
  • We use the time we have available for learn something or study a language, for example English. Let’s equip ourselves with a pair of headphones, preferably wireless, and go to YouTube and type “English conversation” and we will find lots of animated conversations in English with subtitles that will help us learn the language and more listening there it will distract from fatigue.

Then there are two types of running belts. Did you know? It’s about the treadmillthe walking belt, and the skillmill, the mechanical carpet. Which one do you prefer? If everyone knows the tredmill, the second is less well known and coach Taribello explains its functions: “The skillmill allows and forces the athlete to maintain a set pace whether you are walking or running. The skillmill is controlled solely by the push and strength of the athlete. And this function determines a better simulation of road racing.” And let’s add, the skillmill allows you to have a clear perception of fatigue, which doesn’t hurt.”
