Runners in Breda have completed a long journey of 90 kilometers. From Wednesday to Thursday night they walked in stages from Wageningen to Breda with the liberation fire. That fire was lit in Breda on Thursday afternoon. “It’s special to take such a journey together.”
A group of runners is cheered on by spectators on a square in the Haagse Beemden district of Breda on Thursday afternoon. The fire is lit in the middle of the square. Then it’s party time.
There are stalls where children can do crafts, play shuffleboard and old Dutch games. The neighborhood is crowded, especially many children and young people are coming. In total there are about 200 visitors.
“Bringing young and old together.”
Mayor Paul Depla is present and says: “With the war in Ukraine it is extra important that we celebrate our freedom. By walking together you bring young and old together.”
Gijs Driesprong has completed part of the relay race and looks back with a special feeling. “We attended the commemoration of the dead and the national party in Wageningen where the fire was handed out. There we met a refugee from Ukraine and that was very impressive. Taking the journey together was also very special. Many people reacted enthusiastically when we read through their town or city.”
“Need to get together.”
The party was organized by community center Gageldonk with the aim of bringing people together. “People especially want and need to come together again. It is for young and old and Liberation Day is a great opportunity to bring everyone together again. Now that the war is also close, we must realize that freedom is not self-evident. should really celebrate and cherish it,” said president Latifa Cherrabi.
