Rumor about Werder Bremen: SVW star apparently in high demand

Michael Zetterer has only been the Bundesliga goalkeeper in Werder Bremen’s goal for just three months, and the keeper is apparently already in demand at numerous other clubs. No wonder: Zetterer’s strengths are not just in goalkeeping.

Michael Zetterer played eleven games for “his” SV Werder Bremen this season. The 28-year-old goalkeeper only conceded 14 goals and kept a clean sheet three times, including on Sunday in the prestigious duel with FC Bayern, which Bremen won 1-0.

Zetterer had to wait a long time for his chance as a starting goalkeeper. SVW coach Ole Werner is now fully committed to the Munich native, who permanently displaced top dog Jiri Pavlenka in October. But how long will Zetterer continue to play for the Green-Whites? The keeper’s contract is dated until mid-2025.

As is now usual in the football business, there will probably be a discussion with the Werder bosses in the summer about a possible extension or a sale. There are enough interested parties for the former U21 national player. As “Bild” reports, Zetterer’s name is now regularly mentioned at other clubs.

But the tabloid learned even more. Accordingly, there is concrete interest from a club from the French first division: Stades Rennes. The current table tenth in Ligue 1 is looking for a successor to oldie Steve Mandanda and is said to have become aware of Zetterer.

Werder Bremen: Top clubs are also thinking about Zetterer

One of the reasons – in addition to Zetterer’s good performance as a goalkeeper: his play with the ball at his feet. Rennes relies on precisely this kind of possession football, which is why Zetterer would fit perfectly into the system, writes “Bild”.

Zetterer could earn significantly more with the French than he currently does on the Weser. Because Zetterer’s current contract is only designed for a replacement keeper. But the 28-year-old is no longer that.

If, contrary to expectations, the goalkeeper wants to be active again as number two from now on, according to the report, there are other options, even at top clubs. They are not mentioned by name, but some are said to have already put out feelers for the German, as it is said.

Werder captain Marco Friedl recently praised Zetterer. “He’s outstanding on the foot, plays like an outfield player. He’s always ready to be played. We were able to resolve some difficult situations through the goalkeeper. It sometimes seemed as if there was an additional defender on the pitch,” said Friedl.
