Ruiselede holds plebiscite on merger with Wingene

In April, the mayors of Ruiselede and Wingene announced that the two municipalities will merge on January 1, 2025. Following that announcement, some residents took the initiative to request a plebiscite. A petition was submitted by them together with a reasoned note. The request was supported by more than 1,400 residents’ signatures, making it meet the conditions for holding a municipal plebiscite. In October, the city council of Ruiselede therefore decided to proceed with this. Residents can give their answer to the question ‘Should Ruiselede merge with Wingene on 1 January 2025 on Sunday between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m.?’. The vote is not compulsory and the votes are not counted until twenty percent of the inhabitants have cast a vote. The referendum is not binding. The municipal council of Ruiselede is therefore not obliged to follow the results of the consultation. If everything goes according to plan, the result of the vote on Sunday evening will already be known. The voting results are posted at the town hall and published on www.ruiselede.be/volksraadpleging.
