National team director Rudi Völler looks a little enviously towards France.
“The only association that can always sleep through the night without a headache is the French. If five fail, five others play,” said the 1990 soccer world champion at “kicker meets DAZN”.
That’s why Völler is counting on the fans with a view to the home European Championship in 2024. “If you already have a European Championship at home, then you have to take this twelfth man on board. This closeness just has to be there,” said the 62-year-old, but qualified: “The enthusiasm, the euphoria doesn’t come by itself , you have to do something for that.”
After the World Cup debacle against Peru (2-0) and Belgium (2-3), the team of national coach Hansi Flick had a mixed start to the international season.
Völler is hoping for more competition in the DFB selection in the future: “Everyone must have the feeling that it is not always natural to be invited. You always have to do something about it. It must not become normal.”
