The Spanish Prosecutor’s Office has filed a complaint for sexual violence and coercion against the President of the Spanish Football Federation Luis Rubiales (currently suspended) for kissing the footballer Jenni Hermoso during the awards ceremony at the end of the final of the Women’s World Cup last August 20th in Sydney , won by the Spanish national team over England.

the cause

Prosecutors filed the case at Spain’s national court in Madrid two days after soccer player Hermoso formally accused Rubiales of sexual assault. Rubiales could face a fine or a prison sentence of one to four years if he is found guilty of sexual assault. Prosecutors said Friday that Rubiales committed an act of coercion by pressuring Hermoso to speak in her defense soon after the scandal broke about her behavior.

storage or process

Rubiales insisted the kiss was consensual. Hermoso denied this in statements released by her and the players union. Prosecutors asked the judge that Rubiales appear in court to provide pretrial testimony. If the National Court judge agrees to hear the case, it would lead to a formal court investigation resulting in a dismissal or trial.
