He continues: “But then things didn’t work out with Matthijs and then I was back. A channel is always allowed to make its own choices. I also talked to Matthijs about it, like: what should we do and can we get out of it or not? Are we on the same page? I thought: well, no, my added value… I don’t feel enough about it.”

Humberto was content that RTL 4 ultimately chose Matthijs. “As far as I’m concerned, it would have been fine if he had gone, because he also had a very nice idea. That also turned out to be a great program, but it turned out a bit differently, as we all know. And then suddenly there is another open opportunity.”
What does he think of Matthijs’ misconduct? “I wasn’t there. Let them investigate. Even people who have committed murder also come back. Everyone gets a second chance eventually, including Matthijs van Nieuwkerk and when is that? That is up to colleagues, a channel and also viewers. Do viewers want to accept it or not?”

Does TV expert Rob Goossens understand that Humberto did not like a duo with Matthijs? “Yes, they are both at their best on their own. I understand that you then take a step aside. Why? “Because the idea from the start was to broadcast there seven days a week for three weeks. In TV terms, that is a pressure cooker and we knew from Matthijs’ interview in NRC that such an environment had brought out the worst in him.”
