For one year plus option
RSC Anderlecht have signed goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel. The 36-year-old was without a club after his contract with OGC Nice was terminated. Schmeichel signed a working paper for the 2023/24 season with the Belgian first division club, including an option for a further year.
After England, Scotland and France, Belgium is the fourth stop in Europe for the Manchester City-trained goalkeeper. Schmeichel brings the experience of, among other things, 284 Premier League games, 198 Championship games and 36 Ligue 1 appearances to Anderlecht, where he competes with Maxime Dupé, Colin Coosemans and Timon Vanhoutte. Its former maximum market value of 12 million euros dates from 2019 and has been steadily reduced since then.
Hazard, Lingard & Co.: The most valuable non-club professionals
“While we are happy with the current squad, this was an exceptional opportunity to sign a goalkeeper with so much experience and know-how. The transfer of Kasper Schmeichel fits in with our desire to have top competition in all positions. Kasper can be of enormous importance. With his experience on and off the pitch, he is of great value to this club,” said Anderlecht’s Managing Director Sport Jesper Fredberg.
Schmeichel himself said: “Having spoken to Jesper and Brian I was very excited about the project they are implementing. Anderlecht is just a huge club and former teammates from different places have always spoken so warmly and enthusiastically about this place. It was something I really wanted to be a part of.”
