Turned 0-2 against Aston Villa
Rasmus Højlund (20) has finally scored his first Premier League goal after his more than 70 million euro move to Manchester United. In his 15th league appearance, after more than 1,000 minutes, the Dane, who had otherwise only proven to be efficient in front of the box in the Champions League with five goals in six appearances, scored the winning goal on a spectacular evening at Old Trafford.
“I said at half-time: Keep believing, then we will win,” said coach Erik ten Hag to his charges after the game against Aston Villa. Coach Unai Emery’s team from Birmingham, which had been surprisingly strong this season, was ahead 2-0 against the “Red Devils”. In the end, Man United celebrated a 3-2 win, with Højlund scoring the winning goal in the 82nd minute. There had already been a premiere: Homegrown player Alejandro Garnacho (19), who single-handedly equalized the score at 2-2 with his goals in the 59th and 71st minutes, scored twice in the professional game for the first time. Aston Villa took the lead through John McGinn (21st) and Leander Dendoncker (26th) and missed the at least temporary jump to second place in the table.
After the game, United coach ten Hag said about Højlund’s goal drought being over for the time being: “I had a few conversations with him. I highlighted his many goals for Denmark and that he had scored in the Champions League as a demonstration of his ability. He needed to believe in it. When strikers don’t score, it’s always a problem, but he has the strong personality that a goalscorer needs. If he doesn’t stop investing, the goals will come and then we’ll score more often.”
