Royal blue debacle in the DFB Cup: Hoffenheim celebrates a thumping victory against overwhelmed Schalke

Status: 10/18/2022 10:44 p.m

1899 Hoffenheim dashed Schalke’s hopes of at least one sense of achievement in the DFB Cup. The Kraichgauers beat FC Schalke 5-1 on Tuesday evening (10/18/22). Trainer Frank Kramer’s chair wobbles more and more.

Munas Dabbur gave TSG an early lead (5′). Angeliño made his second dangerous attempt to make it 2-0 (16′), Dabbur tied the brace before the break (43′). Ozan Kabak increased after the break in front of just 12,000 spectators (51st). But that’s not all: Pavel Kadeřábek turned the 0-4 into a 0-5 (63′). Dominick Drexler still scored the consolation goal for the completely overwhelmed Schalke (69th).

With the Knappen’s second defeat against Hoffenheim in just five days, it’s becoming increasingly unlikely that coach Frank Kramer will stay with Schalke. In the Bundesliga, “Königsblau” is second to bottom with just six points from ten games.

Schalke disappointed in all respects

After the upward form curve despite the defeat at home against Hoffenheim, the Gelsenkirchen team disappointed this time across the board. Schalke had nothing to oppose the Kraichgauer’s enthusiasm and combination fireworks either front or back. Kabak and Dabbur leveraged the Schalke defense at the first goal with a pass. Angeliño’s goal was preceded by a brilliant save by keeper Alexander Schwolow, who then had just as little chance as with Dabbur’s second success.

The fourth Hoffenheim jubilation swelled after a header from Kabak after a free kick by Robert Skov – but ex-Schalke Kabak didn’t really want to join in the joy. Hoffenheim coach André Breitenreiter, also with a Schalke past, took note of Kadeřábek’s goal with a rather stony expression: the Czech converted a strong cross from Angeliño. Dominick Drexler’s consolation goal – a counterattack played to the end in cooperation with Bülter – was only of a cosmetic nature.

Hoffenheim welcomes Bayern

TSG Hoffenheim has a home game against Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga on Saturday (October 22nd, 2022). Schalke 04 has a day longer break and then plays at Hertha BSC.
