Roy Schepers. He is one of three bakers representing the Netherlands at the world championship la boulangerie in Paris. De Drent is responsible for baking the ‘viennoiserie’, in which he prepares croissants and sweet rolls.
in bakery’The Real Baker Herman Schepers’ in Sleen he is preparing for the upcoming World Cup bread baking.
“We leave for Paris on Friday and then the first preparations will start. The competition will start on Saturday,” says Schepers, while he is cutting the apples for special apple sandwiches. “In principle you have to make everything at the championship, but that is not always possible, because the preparation of special breads takes several days.” That is why the young baker is busy with the preparations.
Not the first time
Schepers has been participating in competitions from an early age. “You used to be able to participate in youth competitions at school and I won a few times.” That is how he came into the picture with the Dutch team. “In the end I did a test to see if I was good enough and that’s how I got into the team,” says the talented baker.
Participation in a tournament like this is not new for Schepers. “I also participated in a competition in 2019, which was also held in France.” According to the baker, the world championship is something different. Schepers: “At the previous tournament you worked with a group of two, now you work in a team of three.”
Prize giving
Next Tuesday it will be clear whether the baker will return to Drenthe with the main prize. Given the previous participations of the Dutch team at the World Cup, the Netherlands is not the favorite. “The Netherlands has never finished on the podium, so third place is the goal,” said Schepers.
