After the surprising Deadline Day transfer of attacker Jermain Defoe, the English third division club AFC Sunderland could soon come up with the next return campaign, according to consistent English media reports. Accordingly, ex-coach and Manchester United legend Roy Keane is a candidate for the coaching post, such as the “Times“ reports.
The 50-year-old had already stood on the sidelines with the “Black Cats” between 2006 and 2008 and led the club from the Championship to the Premier League. With an average of 1.45 points from 100 games, Keane is one of the top 10 most successful Sunderland coaches to date.
The 67-time Ireland international last held the role of head coach at Ipswich Town more than a decade ago, most recently as a pundit for English television. At the end of last year, Manchester United’s former record purchase had in one Interview with the “Sunday Times” announced to be ready for a new challenge. Initial talks between Keane and the AFC are reportedly set to take place later this week.

Sunderland are currently third in League One, which would qualify the club for a place in the promotion playoffs. The team around the German goalkeeper Ron-Thorben Hoffmann had a mixed start to the new year with just one win in four games, most recently they suffered a 6-0 defeat at Bolton Wanderers, as a result of which the club announced the separation from coach Lee Johnson.
“The process of finding a new head coach is ongoing and we will provide more information in due course. In the meantime, we have highly qualified staff who will take care of the team on an interim basis,” said sporting director Kristjaan Speakman.
