The Germany eight has to plan for the European Rowing Championships in Munich without batsman Mattes Schönherr.
The rib infection of the 22-year-old from Potsdam necessitated another change of crew for the regatta from August 11th to 14th on the Olympic course in Oberschleißheim. The experienced Torben Johannesen (Hamburg), who has been in the parade boat of the German Rowing Association (DRV) since 2017, moves to the batsman position for Schönherr. Tom Tewes from Munich is new to the team.
“It’s still a difficult path and runs like a line through the whole season. We have a lot of failures. We always have to find new solutions,” said coach Uwe Bender on Thursday of the German Press Agency with reference to the ongoing Personnel problems when rebuilding the heavily changed and younger crew.
After third place at the World Cup finals in Lucerne in mid-July, the DRV team is aiming for a podium finish in Munich. The big favorites are the Brits, who crossed the finish line on the Rotsee with a comfortable lead of more than five seconds ahead of the German eights. “We have to remain realistic. That can’t be made up for in such a short time,” commented Bender. In addition to the DRV and the British, the Netherlands, Romania and Italy have registered for the EM, which takes place as part of the European Championships from August 11th to 21st with several sports in Munich.
