Peter Knäbel, sports director at FC Schalke 04, does not believe that the resigned sports director Rouven Schröder will return to the Bundesliga anytime soon.
It “would surprise me” if Schröder “wanted to get back somewhere soon,” Knäbel said in an interview with “Bild am Sonntag”. “I hope that for now he will be able to find some rest.”
The 47-year-old Schröder had asked Schalke for personal reasons to exit his contract, which was valid until 2024, but this is currently only on hold.
Recently there had been media reports about a move to RB Leipzig. Schalke would listen to a request from Saxony, Knäbel said. “It’s part of the business and it’s our duty as a board member. I can assure you of one thing: we know very well about Rouven’s qualities.”
It would “rather surprise him if – after a certain time – he didn’t consider any other offers,” Knäbel said of Schröder. “I would even wish for him to return to football. But it is also clear that we are contractually in control.”
