SCHWERIN/MUKRAN (dpa-AFX) – Opponents of the planned liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal on Rügen are positive after talks with the state government. The citizens’ initiatives hope that the federal government will become convinced that such an industrial plant cannot be implemented in such a “short ride”, said Thomas Kunstmann from the Sassnitz citizens’ initiative “No LNG in Mukran” on Tuesday before the state parliament in Schwerin.

Representatives of several initiatives had previously exchanged views with Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig, Economics Minister Reinhard Meyer and Environment Minister Till Backhaus (all SPD). Schwesig is now expected to clearly point out the protest on Rügen again in the upcoming Federal Council meeting.

The citizens’ representatives criticize the previous decision-making process that an open discussion with the federal government has not yet taken place. During the visits of Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) and Economics Minister Robert Habeck (Greens), residents were only informed about decisions that had already been made. The topic of climate protection also played no role, according to Wolfgang Kannengiesser from the voter community “Für Rügen”.

Schwesig also thanked him for the conversation on Tuesday: “There are still serious doubts as to whether there is really a need for another LNG terminal.” Therefore, the state government suggested that there should be a conversation with the Federal Network Agency. In addition, it was agreed “that an energy concept for the island of Rügen based on renewable energies would be developed under the leadership of Agriculture and Environment Minister Till Backhaus”. The initiatives are invited to work on it.

Despite the ongoing resistance on the island, preliminary work for the construction of the LNG terminal has started.
