FULDA (dpa-AFX) – The tire manufacturer Goodyear (Goodyear TireRubber) wants to cut 550 jobs in its Fulda plant. However, the location, which currently has 1,150 employees, is to be retained, as the company announced on request. “It is a difficult but necessary decision that we have to make in order to reduce structural costs and improve our competitive position,” said company spokesman Dominic Stenzel. Employee representatives criticized the announcements.
According to the manufacturer, the downsizing of the Fulda plant enables the manufacturer to reduce cost-intensive capacities and improve the utilization of other plants. The news portals Osthessen-News and hessenschau.de had previously reported on it.
The announcement has no impact on the Fulda tire brand, Stenzel said. about the planned one downsizing there should be negotiations with workers’ representatives. The company announced that all those affected would be adequately supported. Goodyear had already cut 450 jobs in Fulda and 600 at the Hanau site in 2019.
Deputy works council chairman Klaus Korger said the employees were shocked by the plans. “The announcement was like a slap in the face.” Many of the employees have been with the company for decades, and entire families are financially dependent on the jobs. Since 2019, Goodyear has made high investments at the Fulda site to ensure competitiveness. “I was therefore convinced that we are fit for the future and that there are no more personnel measures to be taken,” says Korger. Alexander Wiesbach from the IGBCE added that the plans would not be accepted. How exactly to proceed should be decided in the coming days./mba/DP/ngu
