ROUNDUP: Fighting again on the border between Israel and Lebanon

TEL AVIV/BEIRUT (dpa-AFX) – After shelling from Lebanon on an Israeli army post, the Israeli army said it fired back. In addition, rockets from Lebanon that were fired towards Israel hit Syria, the military announced on Friday. Syrian activists confirmed an attack in the south of the country. There were initially no reports of injuries there.

The pro-Iranian Hezbollah militia spoke of several attacks on Israeli positions near the Lebanese border. In one case, in addition to damage, there were also “victims,” the Shiite organization claimed. Israel’s army said there were no reports of injuries.

There have been increasing violent incidents on the border between Israel and Lebanon since the beginning of the Gaza war. There have already been fatalities on both sides. The pro-Iranian Hezbollah militia in Lebanon has reported at least 52 deaths in its own ranks since the start of the latest confrontations. Six Palestinian militants also died in southern Lebanon.

In the Lebanese capital Beirut on Friday, hundreds of Hezbollah supporters expressed their solidarity with the people of the Gaza Strip and vowed to fight Israel in the event of an attack on Lebanon. The supporters carried Palestinian flags as well as Hezbollah flags. They chanted anti-Israel slogans and shouted “God save Gaza.” On posters they also directed their criticism at the USA and Great Britain for not wanting to stop the violence in Gaza./cir/DP/he
