ROUNDUP: Court allows constant employee control at Amazon in Winsen

HANNOVER (dpa-AFX) – In a data protection control procedure, the Hanover Administrative Court has allowed Amazon Logistik Winsen GmbH to permanently collect data on employee activities. “We have recognized that this control is necessary,” said the presiding judge Andrea Reccius on Thursday after a day of negotiations at the online retailer’s location in Winsen/Luhe in the Harburg district.

The purpose is to control the logistical processes, no personal characteristics are monitored. She spoke of a difficult task of balancing: “We would have wished that the legislature had acted or will act.”

In October 2020, the country’s data protection officer had prohibited the continuous collection of employee data by scanner, and the company had sued. The parties were not ready for an amicable solution. You have one month to appeal after receiving the full judgment, the court allowed the appeal. The next higher instance is the Lüneburg Higher Administrative Court.

Winsen is one of 20 large logistics centers in Germany. Around 1,950 employees work there on an area of 64,000 square meters, most of whom work in a three-shift model. According to the works council, the employees earn the minimum wage when handling the parcels. Amazon contradicted this: the starting wage was 13.17 euros per hour, said a spokesman./koe/DP/zb
