Round of 16 in Sandhausen: No cup experiments at SC Freiburg

Status: 06.02.2023 8:45 p.m

After the 1: 5 in Dortmund, the view in Freiburg goes ahead again. Last year’s finalists want to live up to their role as favorites in Sandhausen and are “highly motivated” about the cup task.

Christian Streich doesn’t want to dwell on the past for long. About the 1:5 defeat at Borussia Dortmund The SC Freiburg coach didn’t really want to speak to second division soccer team SV Sandhausen before the round of 16 in the DFB Cup on Tuesday (6 p.m.). But he couldn’t avoid it. “We didn’t do well enough and didn’t have enough ball security. But we’re going to Sandhausen highly motivated now – there’s no question about that,” said the coach of last year’s finalists one day before the Baden duel in Hardtwald.

Streich in the cup game against Sandhausen on the sidelines

Streich was sent out of the coaching zone in Dortmund on Saturday, defender Kiliann Sildillia also had to leave the field early with yellow-red. So all plans were gone. These bans do not apply in the cup. Streich is allowed to look after the Breisgauer on the sidelines and meets an old acquaintance there. He used to train with SVS coach Alois Schwartz at the Stuttgarter Kickers before Streich left the club for Freiburg.

The two later crossed paths again. But they didn’t only face each other as opponents, because after his release from 1. FC Nürnberg, Schwartz sat in on Streich. Both know each other, both appreciate each other. “I was able to learn a lot – maybe also for our game on Tuesday,” said Sandhausen coach Schwartz. “I have a very collegial relationship with Christian, he is a great coach.”

Eleven goals conceded in the last two away games

Streich didn’t want to accept the praise. “It’s nice of him to say that. The great coach has conceded eleven goals in the last two away games. That hasn’t happened with most coaches on the planet,” he said with a sarcastic undertone. “We know what’s coming. They will be in a good position. Partly because Alois is the coach there.”

Streich and his team want to do better away from home this time. He will therefore refrain from large-scale personnel experiments. The next Bundesliga game on Saturday (3:30 p.m.) against VfB Stuttgart is also irrelevant to the 57-year-old’s thoughts. “Any considerations that we could make are eliminated,” he said.

Goalkeeper change: Noah Atubolu between the posts

Streich will rotate between the posts. As in the second round, U21 international Noah Atubolu can show himself again in the 2-1 win after extra time against FC St. Pauli. “He’s in goal because he’s just doing it well. He earned it and deserved it,” said Streich. He has to do without Yannik Keitel. The midfielder was already absent in Dortmund due to muscular problems.
