Rothe goal on debut: BVB shoots down VfL Wolfsburg – Hertha BSC passes VfB Stuttgart

11 hits on Saturday

After an intoxicating performance, Borussia Dortmund can plan to take part in the Champions League. The dream debut of 17-year-old Tom Rothe and Erling Haaland’s brace were highlights in the sovereign 6-1 (5-0) win over VfL Wolfsburg. And that a week before the top game at FC Bayern.

The peat festival started, of all people, as a teenager and debutant Rothe (24th minute). Axel Witsel (26′) and Manuel Akanji (28′) quickly followed suit, Emre Can (35′) and Haaland twice (38’/54′) scored the other goals. For the Norwegian, this ended an unusual dry spell of almost three months, five appearances and 384 minutes of play without a goal. Wolfsburg’s Ridle Baku (82nd) finally prevented the third 0-6 defeat in Wolfsburg’s Bundesliga history after those in Munich in 2017 and 2019.

The Dortmund fans among the 79,200 spectators fervently called out their last names when stadium announcer Norbert Dickel read out the line-up. At number 36, some paused briefly, first looked at the scoreboard and then hesitantly called out “Rothe”. The U19 international was never in the squad until Saturday.

The absence of Raphael Guerreiro and the fact that Nico Schulz was apparently not quite fit washed the left-back straight into the starting XI. Rothe is only the eighth youngest debutant in Dortmund Bundesliga history, but the youngest defender. His goal made him the fourth youngest Bundesliga goalscorer. Dortmund coach Marco Rose helped two other teenagers make their debuts in the 88th minute: Jamie Bynoe-Gittens (17) and Lion Semic (18).

SC Freiburg stays on course for Europe: 3-0 win against VfL Bochum

SC Freiburg remains on course for the European Cup. The Badeners defeated newly promoted VfL Bochum 3-0 (2-0) on Saturday and drew level on points, at least temporarily, with fourth-placed RB Leipzig, who is still a guest at Bayer Leverkusen on Sunday. Lukas Kübler (5th) and Roland Sallai in a brace (16th/53rd) scored for the strong hosts in front of 34,000 spectators in the Europa Park Stadium.

At VfL midfielder Konstantinos Stafylidis saw the red card in the middle of the second half because of a foul (68th) and coach Thomas Reis, who had apparently complained too vehemently about it. Freiburg should now travel to the DFB Cup semifinals at second division Hamburger SV on Tuesday with plenty of self-confidence. With 36 points, Bochum are further down in the middle of the table, but are not yet sure of remaining in the league.

Hertha BSC wins a basement duel at FC Augsburg 1-0

With a dream goal from Suat Serdar, Hertha BSC heralded the decisive weeks in the relegation battle with a win. Coach Felix Magath’s team won the basement game at FC Augsburg on Saturday thanks to a committed second half 1-0 (0-0) and left the direct relegation zone. Serdar (49th) scored the redeeming winning goal for the Berliners in front of 28,533 spectators with his striking hack hit.

After the painful derby defeat against Union Berlin, the club in the capital draws new hope in the fight against the seventh Bundesliga relegation in the club’s history. Augsburg, on the other hand, missed the “huge step” towards staying up that coach Markus Weinzierl had hoped for. The lead over the Berliners shrank to three points.

Only 0-0 at Mainz 05: VfB Stuttgart back on relegation place

A harmless VfB Stuttgart lost important points in the relegation battle with a zero number on the 30th matchday. The team coached by Pellegrino Matarazzo was hardly able to create any chances in the game at FSV Mainz 05 on Saturday. In front of 30,128 spectators, both opponents gave a very poor performance. Since the next opponent and also threatened competitor Hertha BSC won in Augsburg, VfB slipped back to relegation place 16.
