Roosen wins remarkable sprint in Burgos partly due to the fall of teammate Dekker | NOW

Timo Roosen won the second stage in the Tour of Burgos on Wednesday in a very remarkable way. After David Dekker’s heavy fall in the final kilometer, his Jumbo-Visma teammates had free rein.

While his teammates wanted to put on the sprint for him, Dekker bounced hard over a bump in the road. Erik Dekker’s 24-year-old son crashed and took many riders with him in his fall.

Three of Jumbo-Visma managed to avoid the fall, because they drove ahead of him. The Dutchman Roosen came over the line cheering, followed by his teammates Edoardo Affini (second) and Chris Harper (third).

His fourth professional victory caused Roosen to have mixed feelings. “I didn’t see the crash at all,” said the former Dutch champion on the road. “Of course this is not the way you want to win. Hopefully everyone is okay.”

Most of the victims of the fall appeared to escape with relatively minor injuries. Classification riders Wilco Kelderman and Jai Hindley of BORA-hansgrohe only have a few scrapes, according to their team.

The leader’s jersey in the Tour of Burgos remains on the shoulders of Colombian Santiago Buitrago. The stage race will last until Saturday.
