FC Barcelona can defend its title in the women’s Champions League. The Spanish football club reached the final despite a 2-0 defeat in the return of the semi-finals at VfL Wolfsburg. The 5-1 home win in front of more than 90,000 spectators a week ago at the Camp Nou was by no means negated in Germany.
International Jill Roord made the second goal for Wolfsburg after an hour of football. Shortly after the break, Tabea Wassmuth had given the home team the lead in the Volkswagen Arena, where 22,000 spectators were seated. Lynn Wilms and Dominique Janssen played the entire game for Wolfsburg, Joëlle Smits and Shanice van de Sanden remained on the reserve bench.
Lieke Martens was still missing at Barcelona. She has been sidelined for weeks with a hamstring injury and it is questionable whether she will be fit in time for the Champions League final on May 21. Opponent is the winner of the other semifinal between the French clubs Paris Saint-Germain and Olympique Lyon. Lyon won the first game 3-2, the return starts on Saturday at 21.00.
