Romanians refuse to leave data center without their wages: “We depend on it”

A group of around 120 Romanian construction employees have been waiting for months for overdue salaries after the construction of a Microsoft data center in Middenmeer. It concerns about 1.3 million euros and they do not intend to leave until it has been transferred.

“That might be change for them,” an angry boy tells NH. “But we depend on it.”

The group is, to say the least, dissatisfied with the situation and says they have no intention of leaving until they see the money in their account. “We have to take action to get our money,” adds another man.

2000 kilometers further

This group worked on the construction of a Microsoft data center in Middenmeer. After the completion of the center, the construction workers returned to Romania to await their salaries. When this did not happen, they traveled 2,000 kilometers by bus yesterday to claim their money. The angry group says it is still waiting for one and a half months’ salary for 120 people. In total about 1.3 million euros. “Our lives depend on this money,” the angry group emphasizes.

Microsoft stated in a response that it is not part of this dispute. According to a spokesperson, Microsoft paid the contractor properly, but the bankruptcy of a subcontractor caused defaults among the group of Romanian construction employees.
