Roland Garros, the results of the Italians: Sonego ok, Cecchinato out

Nice performance by the Turin player who overtook the Portuguese in three sets 7-6 6-3 6-4. The Sicilian stops with Hurkacz

The first Italian to qualify for the third round of Roland Garros is Lorenzo Sonego who beat Portuguese Joao Sousa, finalist a week ago in Geneva, 7-6 6-3 6-4. The Piedmontese player suffered in the first set and recovered the break advantage twice: first at 2-1 and then at 4-3. The batting problems continued again when in the twelfth game he had to face 4 set points. But just at this juncture, Sonego found the first serve and came out of the hole. At the tie-break the blue immediately found the mini-break and closed the fraction with an ace for 7-4.

For almost an hour Sonego played at a very high level, collecting 47 winners and making 33 free mistakes. Only at the end of the match did Sonego have to grit his teeth again: first when at 3-2 he canceled two balls of the counter break and then when at 5-2 he had to return one of the two breaks ahead. All simple, however, when at 5-4 he returned to serve for the match. He flew to 40-0, he sent the first two match points but closed in the third with the last winning straight of the match. In the third round he is expected by Casper Ruud who instead left 9 games to the Finnish Emil Ruusuvuori.

Cecchinato greets

On the other hand, Marco Cecchinato, the blue hero of Roland Garros 2018, was out in the second round when the Sicilian surprisingly reached the semifinal by beating none other than Novak Djokovic. This time the Palermitan tripped over Hubert Hurkacz, victorious 6-1 6-4 6-2 in just 89 minutes of play. Cecchinato never reached the break point and on the Pole’s serve he never managed to reach the advantages: 6 points won by the Sicilian on the first of the Pole and 7 points won on the second.
