Röiseland overtakes German biathlon icon

The Norwegian Marte Olsbu Röiseland has overtaken Germany’s biathlon icon Magdalena Neuner and is now the sole record world champion.

At the World Championships in Oberhof, the 32-year-old also won gold in the mixed relay after winning the mixed relay with her compatriot Johannes Thingnes Bö and has 13 World Championship gold medals to her credit.

Neuner (35), now a mother of three, has held the record for women with twelve titles since retiring in 2012.

For Röiseland, the wife of the German women’s assistant coach Sverre Olsbu Röiseland, the title fights at the Rennsteig continue to go well after a difficult season due to health reasons. She had also already won bronze in the pursuit and thus collected three medals.

The three-time Beijing Olympic champion was infected with the corona virus last March and then complained repeatedly about various complaints before she also contracted shingles during preparation in September. She was unable to compete for several months.

Her compatriot Ole Einar Björndalen holds the record for men with 20 world titles. He is followed by Röiseland’s teammate Johannes Thingnes Bö, who now has a total of 17 titles after his fifth gold in Oberhof.
