The planned concert by Roger Waters on May 21 in Munich takes place. After the announced cancellation of the concert in Frankfurt, there were also discussions in the Bavarian state capital about banning the performance of the controversial musician.
The city council stated that it had no legal basis for terminating the contract with the concert promoter extraordinarily. Instead, actions for international understanding and against anti-Semitism would be planned in the city. Munich’s Lord Mayor Dieter Reiter from the SPD, on the other hand, is striving to create a legal basis with the state government to be able to ban performances in similar cases in the future.
After more and more statements to be interpreted as anti-Semitic and his statements critical of Joe Biden and NATO before the UN Security Council, the ex-Pink Floyd member has come under increasing criticism. As part of his “This Is Not A Drill” tour, he played the first European concert in Lisbon on March 17, where there were also discussions about a cancellation beforehand.
Waters wants to perform, but for Munich there is now clarity. It remains to be seen how things will continue in other cities, such as Berlin, and whether the decision in Munich will have an impact.
