The photo shows a man holding a small bundle to the sky, crying and accusing. There may be a child’s corpse inside, and the man may be a Palestinian – the origin of the picture is unclear. Roger Waters, one of the most prominent critics of Israel, posted the photo on X on Tuesday (November 7, 2023) – as part of a photo collage. Next to it is a screenshot of a post that he may have made himself, in which Eurythmics singer Annie Lennox attacked. The origin of this post is still unclear.
Like the former Pink Floyd musician, Lennox is one of the supporters of the BDS movement, which advocates a cultural boycott of Israel. Many accuse Roger Waters of anti-Semitism (he denies being an anti-Semite), but he himself fights loudly for the rights of Palestinians.
Waters is now apparently accusing his musician colleague of being fickle and losing a clear view of the conditions in the war zone of Gaza. “Dear Annie Lennox,” said the 80-year-old, “I know your heart is in the right place, so please stop advocating for both sides. There are no fair conditions there. There are the oppressed, the Palestinians, and there are the oppressors, the Israeli government. The oppressor has been murdering the oppressed for 75 years now.” Then a call from Waters: “Join the voices of the people, the huge worldwide protest choir, and demand that the Israeli fascists …” Here Water leaves the outcome of the sentence open . And instead posts in all caps: “Stop the genocide now! Without ‘if’, without ‘and’ and without ‘but’! Stop him now!”.
In the first few days after the start of Hamas’ attack on Israel with around 1,400 deaths (October 7, 2023), which preceded the counterattack of a military offensive in Gaza, things were noticeably quiet around Roger Waters. To date, the political singer has not commented on the Israeli victims – when fighting began in Gaza City, he became even louder, as documented in an X-video.
It is not yet known whether Annie Lennox responded to Waters’ verbal attack.
