Roger Schmidt new coach in Lisbon

Former Bundesliga coach Roger Schmidt takes over the team from Portuguese record-breaking champions Benfica Lisbon. The club confirmed this on Twitter on Wednesday evening.

The former Bundesliga coach Roger Schmidt takes over the Portuguese top club Benfica Lisbon. The 55-year-old signed a two-year contract with the record champions until 2024. This was announced by national player Julian Weigl’s club on Thursday.

Schmidt and Benfica had already announced a basic agreement at the end of April. Schmidt, who won the Dutch Cup and finished runners-up with PSV Eindhoven, will succeed Nelson Verissimo. After his time at Bayer Leverkusen, Schmidt initially worked for Beijing Guoan in China, before taking over Eindhoven in 2020.
