Roger Schmidt gets some breathing room: Benfica takes a late derby win

Takes lead in the table

Roger Schmidt celebrated an important derby victory with Benfica Lisbon thanks to a crazy final phase. With two goals in stoppage time, the coach, who was under pressure, secured a 2-1 (0-1) win against Sporting Lisbon on Sunday evening.

João Neves (90th minute + 4) and Casper Tengstedt (90th + 9) played a strange game in front of 62,166 spectators in favor of Portugal’s record champions. The Swedish attacker Viktor Gyökeres (45th) gave the guests the lead. Sporting were outnumbered for almost half because defender Gonçalo Inácio was shown a yellow-red card in the 51st minute for repeated foul play.

After the win, Benfica took over the lead from Sporting thanks to the better goal difference. Schmidt has recently come under pressure at Benfica, particularly due to their poor performance in the Champions League this season. His team, which was in the quarter-finals last season, has lost all four games so far and can no longer reach the knockout phase.
