Something about this record is better than anything Jeff Tweedy has produced before. Better than the soulful senior gymnastics with Mavis Staples. Even better than the soft folk sound of Low’s “The Invisible Way” (2013). But before you can fathom the cause, you hear “Loving You Is The Only Way To Fly,” which Crowell co-wrote with Sarah Buxton and Jedd Hughes, in the version of his songwriting partners:innen Kitsch, here’s an enchanting ballad.
A wonderfully unnostalgic late work
The jubilant country-pop “You’re Supposed To Be Feeling Good” follows, a song Crowell once lent to Emmylou Harris for “Luxury Liner” (1976). “No Place To Fall” is a deep nod to his childhood idol Townes Van Zandt, “Everything At Once” is a lively time-sensitive duet with Tweedy.
The highlight, however, is Ready To Move On, a contemplative masterpiece in which Crowell evokes an escape from a world full of antagonisms. Incidentally, the cover of the “Chicago Sessions” quotes Crowell’s debut album. A nostalgic nod to an otherwise wonderfully unnostalgic late work.
