A robust old oak on the grounds of the De Paasbergen care center in Odoorn is competing in the Tree of the Year election of the SBNL Natuurfonds this autumn. And they are proud of that at the care center.
“I think it’s great,” says resident Jannie Brouwer-Ubels, who lives in a house with a view of the tree. “I like it in all seasons. Now also with all those acorns on it.” Amateur historian Marchinus Elting also enjoys the imposing and somewhat hidden appearance at the care location: “I don’t believe many people know that this beautiful oak is here. It is of course tucked away a bit.”
The tree in Odoorn was selected from 82 applications. One tree is nominated from each province. “I am proud of the fact that this tree is in our garden,” says activity supervisor Nichon Katoele with a broad smile.
She organizes many activities around the tree and was the one who gave up the tree “I found out through social media that this election existed. Then I got into the pen and so we gave up the tree. Two weeks ago I got a phone call that it had become the most beautiful tree in Drenthe.”
