Leeds defender Robin Koch is working on his comeback in the German national football team. “Due to my injuries and the corona infection, things have been very unfortunate for me recently,” said the 26-year-old central defender on the “Sky” TV channel.
“Nevertheless, my goal is to join the national team again. That’s why it’s so important for me to play a good first half of the season, to perform, to stay fit and then to come back to the national team.”
Koch switched from SC Freiburg to Leeds United in the summer of 2020. Last season, relegation from the Premier League was avoided on the last day of the game.
“We had a difficult last season, with a lot of injuries for me personally, but also for the whole team. This put us in the relegation battle and our main goal is to avoid that in the coming season,” said Koch. “We’ve added new players which gives us a bigger squad and if we stay fit we can have a really good season.”
Key players Raphinha and Phillips gone
With Raphinha (FC Barcelona) and Kalvin Phillips (Manchester City), Leeds have lost two key players for the new season. “At this point I can certainly speak for the team that both of them will be missed a lot. Nevertheless, I think that we have gained quality with the new players on and off the pitch.”
In the future, among others, Marc Roca, previously under contract with FC Bayern Munich, will play for Leeds. “I have already told him that I will continue to speak German with him so that he does not forget it.”
Koch can well imagine a return to Germany: “You can’t rule out anything in football anyway and since I had a great time in Germany, I can’t and won’t rule out coming back at some point.”
