Robin Haase and Botic van de Zandschulp failed to win the doubles title at the masters tournament in Rome. The Dutch tennis duo had to beat the Monegasque Hugo Nys and Jan Zielinski from Poland in the final on the Italian clay court: 5-7 1-6. The game was decided after just over an hour.
Haase (36) and Van de Zandschulp (27) formed an occasional doubles duo in Rome. De Hagenaar doubled in recent weeks, after his split with Matwé Middelkoop, with the Austrian Philipp Oswald. Van de Zandschulp mainly focuses on singles, but also regularly competes in doubles with changing partners.
Haase and Van de Zandschulp had won in Rome in the semi-finals against Wesley Koolhof and his British partner Neal Skupski, who were placed first. Van de Zandschulp was already stuck in the second round in the singles.
Medvedev’s first clay court title
Daniil Medvedev took the singles title in Rome. The third seeded Medvedev was too strong for the Dane Holger Rune in the final in two sets: 7-5 7-5. The number seven on the seeding list had previously eliminated the Serbian defending champion Novak Djokovic.
Medvedev used his second match point after more than one hour and forty minutes of tennis on the Roman clay. For the now bearded Russian it was his twentieth tournament victory. He won five of them this year in Rotterdam, Doha. Dubai, Miami and now Rome. Medvedev greeted his first win on a clay tournament with a smile. “It will not be love, but after today I will call it friendship,” he described his relationship with the ground brick.
