Robin Gosens and Union, that’s love at first kick

By Matthew Koch

In his second game for Union in Mainz (4:1) Gosens (29) was in the starting XI for the first time. He scored his first two Bundesliga goals right away.

Under the eyes of national coach Hansi Flick (58), he tied a brace, the first of his career! Gosens: “If you imagine the perfect day, it comes very close to the perfect day.”

Gosens made it 1-0 (4th) early on with a powerful long-range shot into the bottom left corner. When Union’s Brenden Aaronson was sent off with yellow-red in the 21st minute and Darmstadt quickly equalized 1-1 (24th), the game could have turned.

But Gosens brought the Köpenicker back in the lead 2:1 (34th) after a free kick by Josip Juranovic.

That finished Darmstadt. Kevin Behrens headed in before the break with his fourth goal of the season to make it 3-1 (39′). Danilho Doekhi put the lid on it with the 4:1 (65th minute).

Gosens: “That’s what distinguishes Union. We have the great strength that Union never loses its head for a second of the game. We know exactly what we have to do even when we are outnumbered.”

Gosens is looking forward to Leipzig

Gosens is already looking forward to the next home game against Leipzig on Sunday (5:30 p.m.). “Then we have a big dress rehearsal. Then you will see how far we have developed as a team.”

Hopefully defender Danilho Doekhi is fit, he probably sustained a cheekbone injury in Darmstadt. The exact diagnosis is still pending.

Before that, the Champions League draw is scheduled for Thursday (6 p.m.). Gosens would be happy about his former club Inter Milan: “It would come full circle if you were allowed to play against Inter. That would be a really cool experience for me and the boys. It would be a nice ending.”

And for him the next highlight at the beginning with Union.
