Robert Plant and Ronnie James Dio are not front men

Dee Snider thinks Robert Plant and Ronnie James Dio are good singers but not good frontmen. The Twisted Sister singer tweeted that he admired the musicians for their voices. However, both lack conviction as actors on stage. Plant has not commented on this (it probably won’t either), Dio died in 2010.

Snider started the debate with a tweet about drummer Cozy Powell, who played among other things with Dio at Rainbow. One of his followers replied that Dio was one of the best frontmen after Freddie Mercury. Snider countered that singing and performing should not be confused. “There’s a big difference between a great frontman and a great singer,” wrote the 67-year-old. “Ronnie was one of the greatest singers of all time, but as a frontman he was really just on stage and singing. Freddie was a one-off singer AND frontman.”

Another Twitter user then brought up Plant. Speaking of the Led Zeppelin singer, Snider said, “I’m a HUGE fan of Plant’s voice, but he gives me nothing as a performer. He was handsome, had great hair, but just stood on stage with one hand in the air and sang his ass off.”

Snider adds that many great frontmen are not good singers. A good one, on the other hand, is characterized by the fact that he is “everywhere on stage” and interacts with the audience. He cited Axl Rose, Mick Jagger, Bono, James Brown and Paul Stanley as examples. The musician also praised Kid Rock: “You love him or you hate him, Kid Rock is one of the best I’ve ever seen.”

Furthermore, the Twisted Sister singer distinguished between performance and stage presence. He wrote: “I’m not saying that Dio, Plant, etc. don’t have a stage presence. They have it in abundance. But they are not performers.”
