Robert Lewandowski has passed Ajax player Sébastien Haller on the top scorers list of the Champions League. The Bayern Munich striker had a large share in the 7-1 victory over Red Bull Salzburg with a hat-trick on Tuesday evening, bringing his total this CL season to twelve.
The Pole also set a record with his hat-trick. No one has ever scored three times in the first 23 minutes of a Champions League match. Lewandowski needed two penalties, in the twelfth and 21st minutes. Two minutes after his second penalty kick, he made it 3-0 from a counter.
In the European Cup I once there was a player who previously had a hat-trick. John Eriksson scored three times in the first 22 minutes on behalf of Sweden’s Djurgardens in 1955.
Haller will get the chance to further boost his total next Tuesday, when Ajax tries to reach the quarterfinals at home at the expense of Benfica. The first game in Lisbon ended in 2-2. The second Amsterdam goal then came in the name of Haller, who has already scored eleven goals in his first season in the billion-dollar ball.
