Robbie Williams recently revealed that years ago he was asked to be the new Queen frontman, before Adam Lambert later took on that not-so-minor part.
During an on-air interview with SiriusXM, he revealed that Brian May and Roger Taylor were impressed with him when they worked together on a re-recording of We Are The Champions for the 2001 film A Knight’s Tale. Later, the specific request came to Robbie. But he refused!
“Even though I’m very confident here on the mic, I have very low self-esteem,” said the singer. Football fanatic and in awe: Robbie Williams
Robbie Williams on Freddie Mercury: “He’s godlike”
“I thought I’d spare them the audacity to put me on a stage and put me on the same footing as Freddie Mercury. For me he is a figure from heaven. He is godlike. It was just too scary.”
However, Williams dutifully added that there were also monetary reasons for declining: “At the time I was playing in stadiums myself. I didn’t want to have to split the money in three, but that’s another story.”
The desire of the remaining Queen members to perform live again was so great that they asked Paul Rodgers (Bad Company) in 2004 to be on the safe side – and received an acceptance from him. This was followed by many concerts around the world and a joint (redundant) album: “The Cosmos Rocks”. Basically the beginning of the Queen boom in the 21st century, which probably reached its peak with the biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody” and possibly finally secured the band’s legendary status.
