Rob Jetten is a candidate as party leader D66 in the upcoming elections
Rob Jetten (36) was the first candidate to become party leader of D66. A spokesperson for the party confirms this to the ANP news agency reporting in AD.
In an interview with the newspaper, the outgoing minister of Climate and Energy says that it is time for a new generation. “It is necessary that a new political generation takes the helm, which drags less of that past with it and tries to solve things openly and uninhibitedly,” said Jetten.
Two years later, Jetten did not stand as a candidate as party leader to make way for Sigrid Kaag. “In the meantime I have learned a lot myself in this ministry. Now I am ready.”
On Thursday, Sigrid Kaag announced that he would no longer continue as party leader. She is under serious threat and heavily protected and no longer wants to do that to her family.
It is not yet certain whether Jetten will actually become party leader. D66 organizes party leader elections. Against it AD Jetten says he hopes for a lot of support from the party, “not only from the top, but also from the ordinary members who will soon have to campaign on the street”.

Welcome to this blog
Welcome to this blog. Last Friday, the Rutte IV cabinet fell and on Monday morning outgoing Prime Minister Mark Rutte (VVD) announced that he would leave Dutch politics after a new cabinet was formed. Deputy Prime Minister Sigrid Kaag (D66), foreign minister Wopke Hoekstra (CDA) and party chairman Pieter Heerma (CDA) have also announced that they are leaving politics in The Hague. At the VVD, Dilan Yesilgöz is the main candidate to succeed Mark Rutte as party leader. She, like former Member of Parliament André Bosman, put herself forward for election. Edith Schippers, a favorite for the VVD leadership, said she was unavailable.
In this blog we report on the latest developments surrounding the fall of the cabinet.
