Tour winner Annemiek van Vleuten secured the world title at the Road World Championships with a spirited attack in the last kilometer. Liane Lippert just missed a medal.
The 24-year-old from Friedrichshafen took fourth place on Saturday (09/24/22) after 164.3 kilometers. The exceptional Dutch driver van Vleuten clinched victory despite a broken elbow. Lotte Kopecky from Belgium and Silvia Persico from Italy took second and third place.
The race was particularly bitter for Lippert. The German had attacked on each of the last two laps and had already distanced the favorites in a five-man lead group. But shortly before the goal came the merger.
Van Vleuten then surprised with an attack and took the win by a second. The 39-year-old fell heavily shortly after the start of the mixed team time trial on Wednesday and broke her elbow. Nevertheless, it was enough for the second world title after 2019.
