A clear emergency, but whose contours are becoming increasingly complex to define. The three dead and one injured in the road accident that took place in the late evening of April 27 on the provincial road 580, between Ginosa and Marina di Ginosa, join the 4 young people who lost their lives on April 25 last on the provincial road that connects Bitonto to Modugno, still in Puglia. Cold chronicle in an endless series of road victims that becomes really sad and difficult to understand. In statistical terms, in fact, it is only possible to have the Aci-Istat estimates relating to the first six months of 2022, the most up-to-date on the subject, which show an increase in accidents with injuries (+24.7%) compared to the same period of 2021 , of victims (+15.3%) and wounded (+25.7%). In summary, from 1 January to 30 June 2022 year we have witnessed 81,437 accidents which they caused 1,450 dead And 108,996 wounded: an average of 450 accidents, 8 dead and 602 injured every day.

young people in danger

However, 2021 remains a comparison strongly conditioned by the lockdowns, that is, by the lesser opportunity for road traffic. Therefore, it is more correct to refer the first half of 2022 to the equivalent in 2019, compared to which there is a slight decrease: road accidents -2.6%; injured -6.8% and dead -5.5%. With reference to the road category, victims decrease significantly on motorways (-11.8%) while on urban and extra-urban roads the decrease is estimated at around 5%. Just 2021, however, represents the last year for which complete data is available for the 12 months, and the picture as a whole becomes really disheartening. There were 365 young people aged between 15 and 24 who died on the street, or an average of one a day in this age group, with a leap forward of 44.1% compared to the previous year. In the age group between 15 and 19 the number of deaths per million inhabitants rises to 51, in that between 20 and 24 it jumps to 74, values well above the national and continental averages: just think that the number 74 of Italian boys aged between 20 and 24 is exceeded only by the national averages of Romania, Bulgaria and Luxembourg. In total, in 2021, 2,875 people lost their lives on Italian roads. In 2019 there were 3,173 dead, in 2018 3,334, in 2017 3,378, in 2010 4,144. Figures that do not take into account the additional personal and social cost of the injured. In 2021, 204,728 people were injured, recording a decrease of 15.2% compared to 2019 and an increase of 28.6% compared to 2020.

staggering numbers

Still looking at 2021, the last complete year that we can think about by analysis, the social cost of road accidents amounted to 16.4 billion euros, or 0.9% of the national GDP, even higher than in 2010 and in growth of 26% compared to 2020. It is an emergency to be faced on different levels, if it is true that 73.1% of the accidents occurred on urban roads, but the number of victims was concentrated above all on extra-urban roads, with 47.5%. As regards victims, the most significant increase, compared to 2021, is recorded on motorways (+26.2%), followed by extra-urban roads (+19.8%) and urban roads (+19.1%).
