ROACH: not just any coffee table book

There is no Rotterdammer who does not know Schorem Haarsnijder & Barbier on the Nieuwe Binnenweg. Many men stood in line for one of the twelve Signature Haircuts . They no longer even had to go to the shop for their Reuzel pomade, most hairdressers now sell them.

In addition to Reuzel, Schorem now has a new product: the coffee table photo book ROACH. At first glance, it is a book to look at: It is full of photos of special, eccentric models styled by Duncan Bailey in the style of the twenties and thirties of the last century. Photos taken by Schorem’s in-house photographer Jelle Mollema are already the banner of the barber.

If you sit down at your coffee table, you will see that it is also a reading book: between the photos meanders the comic strip by cartoonist and illustrator Erik Kriek about mafia boss Roy Barbosa from the city of Eversteijn (Rotterdam). When Barbosa’s twins are kidnapped, the balance between the Barbosa family and a rival mafia family in Eversteijn is upset. With a lot of fear, misery and bloodshed as a result. There are also women in the story, says Robert-Jan Rietveld, co-owner of Schorem, who wrote the text together with Lennart van Baalen. “It’s also about love. No good story without love.”

The models in the book are decked out like the characters in the story. They are well-known, semi-known and sometimes unknown Rotterdammers, which makes it a real Rotterdam book. And nice to see if you recognize someone.
