The former island of Marken is looking forward to an exciting evening. The water of the Markermeer is extremely high and the Marken surrounding dike on the south side has been rejected. The dike there still needs to be strengthened and that is why Rijkswaterstaat will be carrying out a dike inspection tonight. Update: dike Marken is not about to break.
The situation is being closely monitored, Mayor Marian van der Weele said in a letter to residents.
The outcome of the inspection will be shared before midnight tonight, she writes in the letter. “Your safety is our top priority and we will do everything we can to ensure it.”
