Road users must expect a very heavy morning and evening rush hour tomorrow, Rijkswaterstaat warns. This is due to the announced demonstrations by the farmers. It can also be extra busy on the highway outside those rush hours. Anyone who can work from home would be wise to do so, says Rijkswaterstaat.
Rijkswaterstaat expects the most consequences in the middle and east of the country. But there can also be traffic nuisance around The Hague, for example.
At the request of the police, the entrances and exits of exit 17 of the A1 near Stroe will be closed from 6 a.m. on Wednesday. That is the connection with the N310 where a lot of extra traffic is expected for the big manifestation. Rijkswaterstaat deploys additional road inspectors and road traffic controllers. Both on the road and from the traffic control center it is then possible to respond to developments on the highways.
‘Not on the highway with a tractor’
Farmers who go to the action day in the Gelderse Vallei with a tractor or other agricultural vehicle on Wednesday are not allowed to drive on highways or motorways. The police will actively enforce this traffic rule ‘where necessary and possible’, a spokesperson said. The organizers of the protest also do not want their supporters to drive on the highway with tractors.
‘Not on the highway’ is the top point of a code of conduct that action group Farmers Defense Force (FDF) has sent to participants. It also contains points such as ‘do not block’ and ‘do not commit violence’. During previous farmer protests, which also revolved around nitrogen policy, farmers drove tractors repeatedly on highways. This is prohibited by law, because it can lead to dangerous situations.
“Due to their slowness, tractors on the highway/motorway can cause unsafe situations,” the police explained once again. The spokesperson adds that ‘per situation’ it will be examined what exactly needs to be done, should farmers nevertheless drive on the highway or motorway.
